Major Arcana Tarot Cards – The Fool

Often depicted as a man wearing colourful clothes with a pack tied to a staff and accompanied by a small dog, the Fool is one of the most enigmatic cards of the Major Arcana. Those unfamiliar with the Tarot often mistakenly believe that the Fool represents stupidity or being the victim of some deception. However, the meaning of the Fool card has much deeper significance.

The Fool’s Story

Each card in the Tarot has an associated story. The Fool’s is less of a story and more of a spiritual snapshot. The Fool has all his worldly possessions in his knapsack and wanders without direction. His head is so busy with thoughts, visions and feelings that were it not for the dog with him he would fail to notice obstacles and disasters in his path. The question that comes with this picture is will the Fool learn to pay attention to where he’s going, before it’s too late?

The Fool is the card of infinite possibilities. He carries all that he needs to do or be anything he wants. While he may be wandering aimlessly, the meaning here is that each step he takes has the potential to be the beginning of a brand new journey. However, the presence of the dog acts as a warning that, while it’s great to be fascinated by everything around you, you need to watch your step.

Who is the Fool?

In a reading, the Fool can signify a person in the questioner’s life or the questioner themselves. Usually, the card signifies the latter, but not in a negative way. It suggests that the questioner is ready to begin a new journey; that they are ‘free’ of certain bonds or have been given a second chance. Travel is often a part of this card’s meaning, sometimes literally, as in moving home or travelling to begin a new job, or metaphorically, as in the beginning of an emotional journey.

Reversed, this card can allude to naivety or misplaced optimism. The opportunities ahead might not be all that they seem and the questioner would do well to listen to the advice given by the rest of the tarot cards.
