Some people ask me “Are you psychic or do you just read the tarot”. It’s a strange question to ask someone who has read the cards since the age of seven. The tarot is an entity with at least six hundred years of history that we know of; an occult discipline that has perplexed and confused the great thinkers, philosophers and psychologists of history. There is no ‘just’ about it. tarot is a discipline, an Entity in itself and one which should not be approached in such a flippant manner. A word like ‘psychic’, on the other hand, has no such history and smacks of vaudeville, quackery and showmanship. I won’t ask you if you have any connection with an ‘R’ or the number 8. Nor will I throw names at you until you recognise one. And if that is what you seek, I encourage you to seek elsewhere. I am no showman and will not indulge in pantomime. That is not to suggest I am a ‘non-believer’ as some would like to think. I am a great believer in the unknown, the occult, the ‘hidden’. And this is no idle belief. It is a conviction borne of experience. That Intelligence beyond our comprehension speaks through the tarot is undeniable. Equally undeniable is the fact that the tarot does not speak to everyone. It’s not something one can learn, parrot-fashion on a mere whim. But if one approaches the tarot with respect, the tarot gives respect in return, alongside a wealth of information that – used wisely – enables us to get the best out of the often difficult decisions and situations we face in life. It tells us where we are going and how to avoid or improve it. It empowers us when we are otherwise disempowered. It gives us a chance to become masters of our own destiny.
