Why Acupuncture Works

Acupuncture may have been around for some 4,000 years, but that hasn't stopped sceptics doubting its effectiveness.

Now, however, the ancient Chinese practice has been given the official thumbs up by US medical researchers who've proved how and why acupuncture definitely does work.

In trials, scientists at the University of Rochester found that the treatment caused the body to release a natural chemical, adenosine that acts as both a painkiller and an anti-inflammatory. In fact, it turns out that getting the needle produces more than twenty times the body's normal amount of this healing chemical!

Says researcher Maiken Nedergaard, ‘The view that acupuncture has little benefit beyond the placebo effect has really hampered research into the technique. I believe we've found the main mechanism by which acupuncture relieves pain.’
