Paul the Octopus - RIP

Sad news for all fans of the phenomenon that was Paul the Octopus. The eight-legged wonder who correctly predicted all of Germany's World Cup results has died.

According to sources at the Oberhausen Sea Life Centre where Paul lived, the Weymouth-born octopus died peacefully of natural causes. The common octopus only has a life expectancy of a few years so Paul's demise was not completely unexpected for the staff who found him lifeless in his tank.

The centre manager Stefan Porwoll added, "We are consoled by the knowledge that he enjoyed a good life here and that the care provided for him by our dedicated displays team could not have been bettered."

"His success made him almost a bigger story than the World Cup itself. We may decide to give Paul his own small burial plot within our grounds and erect a modest permanent shrine."
