Bye bye booze!

I honestly don't know what's happening to me. I wrote recently about how I seem to have lost my love of shopping – and now I've given up alcohol too.

Following a friend's particularly traumatic hen do (party bus, stripper, vodka shots, you name it) and a trip to V Festival (free drink and a truly terrible hangover) I decided that it was time to give my body a break. And what a revelation!

I have been a big wine fan since I used to sit in the park with my friends and cheap bottles of the stuff as a teenager, and even now I love nothing more than sitting down with my mates and exchanging gossip over several glasses. But as much as I hate to admit it, I feel a million times better since I ditched the plonk.

I promised myself I would give up for an entire month and two weeks in I'm finding a whole lot easier than I expected. I've still got two weddings and a friend's 30th to get through, both of which will no doubt be boozy affairs. But when I went to a party last week I got a strange satisfaction from being able to get in my car at the end of the night and drive home instead of waiting for half an hour for an overpriced taxi to roll up. Needless to say, all those people who mocked me for drinking water all night were very happy to get a lift home!

I'm not sure how I'll feel at the end of the two weeks, but I honestly can't see myself going back to my old ways. I love the freedom of being able to leave a party whenever I want, and then waking up with a clear head the next morning.

I never thought I'd say it, but I've realised that I can have just as much fun without a wine glass in my hand. Who would have thought!?

  • Give me a break!

I'm self-employed and I work from home quite a lot and I realised last week that I very rarely give myself time off. If I was still working in an office like I used to I would spend rather a lot of time chatting to colleagues, taking nice long lunch breaks and checking out bargains on eBay...
