New research has discovered that people are most likely to become depressed in middle-age.

Apparently, whether you live in Azerbaijan or Zimbabwe, you're levels of happiness follow a U shape - with you being most content when you're young or old. And it doesn't matter whether you're rich, you're poor, you've got kids, you're divorced etc…

Two million people from 80 countries were studied, but in the UK, the probability of depression peaks around the age of 44.

Top tips then? Andrew Oswald, from the University of Warwick, one of the men behind the research, says: 'Perhaps realising that such feelings are completely normal in mid-life might even help individuals survive this phase better.'

'One possibility is that individuals learn to adapt to their strengths and weaknesses, and in mid-life quell their infeasible aspirations.'
